Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity on our Research and Insights team for an aspiring market research professional. We're looking for a candidate who is highly interested in conducting market research in the foodservice industry, and is excited about the possibility of driving insights for restaurant operators, ingredient manufacturers, and foodservice distributors. This paid internship is best suited for someone who (1) has experience conducting research, (2) is comfortable learning about new topics, and (3) can picture themselves working in a fast-paced research environment.

The Market Research Intern will work within Technomic’s Research and Insights division, supporting both consumer (i.e., customer) and operator (i.e., business-to-business) research projects. This individual will work within larger project teams to coordinate data collection, conduct secondary research, participate in qualitative (i.e., interviews) and quantitative (i.e., survey) research, and create reports based on research findings. Overall, the intern's work will directly contribute to our clients, many of whom are Fortune-500 companies and well-known consumer brands in the foodservice domain.

Upon graduation from their academic program, successful interns will be strongly considered for a full-time role within our Research and Insights division. The internship is designed to last for 6 months or longer, depending on the student's temporal proximity to graduation.

Potential Internship Responsibilities:

  • Conduct secondary research on key project topics
  • Use Technomic’s internal research tools to answer important business questions
  • Help build internal contact lists for use on upcoming research projects
  • Conduct interviews with foodservice professionals to gather data and trend information
  • Test, edit, and write surveys for use in client research projects
  • Analyze open-ended responses from surveys and interviews
  • Assist team members with data entry from field research
  • Summarize and write about information gathered through research processes

Skills You’ll Acquire During the Course of the Internship:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel (e.g., formulas, Pivot Tables, etc.)
  • Direct experience with survey design and programming (e.g., Survey Monkey, SPSS, etc.)
  • Direct experience with qualitative research methods and analysis (e.g., interviews, focus groups)
  • Advanced knowledge of data analysis and analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R, etc.)
  • Project management and prioritization expertise
  • Report preparation and presentation experience
  • Culinary knowledge and broader knowledge of the foodservice industry

Experience and Skills:

Basic Requirements to Land the Internship:

  • US Citizen or US permanent resident
  • Attending a Chicago-based university
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a business or social science field
  • 3.3 GPA or higher
  • Junior, Senior or Graduate student status
  • Commitment of 20 hours per week during school semester

Skills You Need to be a Successful Intern:

  • Able to communicate in a professional manner in both written and verbal formats
  • High degree of initiative and internal motivation
  • Strong sense of professionalism and work ethic
  • Ability to handle tight project timelines and dynamic reporting deadlines
  • Very high attention to detail
  • Experience with observational, survey, interview, and/or focus group research methodologies
  • Working knowledge of basic statistics and data analysis
  • Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel
  • Comfortable presenting research to others in oral and written formats
